WHAT OUR CUSTOMERS ARE SAYING
"Knox is the best. I never have any pest issues which is proof their product works. The technicians are always very accommodating and the billing department is very professional."
(A message from our owner, Sean Knox)
In leadership, we often focus on the “what” and the “how”—what are our goals, and how will we achieve them? But I find that the most enduring leaders are driven by a much deeper question: “why?” Your “why” is your core motivation, the fuel that gets you through the obstacles and keeps you focused. For me, that “why” was shaped by powerful influences and is sustained by a deep-set, personal drive.
When I’m asked about my biggest influence, the answer is easy: my father. I was incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to work with him and, more importantly, to watch how he led. In the pest control business, you learn quickly that you are not just managing pests; you are managing people—both your customers and your team.
My father was a master at this. He had a natural ability to connect with people, to make them feel seen and heard. Whether it was a customer worried about their home or a team member facing a personal challenge, he led with empathy and a genuine focus on them as individuals. That “focus on people” was the single biggest influence on my career. It’s a lesson I carry with me every single day. At Knox Pest Control, we are a people-first company, and that is a direct legacy from my father.
While my father’s example provided the roadmap, my personal motivation comes from a different place. A lot of it comes from within. I’ll be honest: I have a bit more insecurity than I might show, and that insecurity has always motivated me to achieve.
It’s probably not the most popular or “healthy” reason to share, but it’s the truth. Wanting to succeed, to prove that I can, is a powerful driver. This is where a Growth Mindset becomes so critical. That feeling of “Am I good enough?” isn’t a dead end; it’s a starting line. It fuels a relentless desire to learn, to adapt, and to get better. It’s what pushes me to make sure Knox Pest Control is performing at the highest possible level. Gaining a sense of worth through high performance means you can never settle for “good enough.” You must always be striving for “better.”
But that internal drive needs a counterbalance, and for me, that is my family. My other, and most important, motivation is my desire to be a great husband and father. This is the “why” that puts everything else into perspective. This drive is what shapes my work-life balance. It’s not just about providing for my family, but about being present for them. It pushes me to be an example of the importance of hard work, but also an example of the importance of being there for the moments that matter.
Ultimately, my leadership philosophy is a blend of these three forces: the people-first legacy from my father, an internal, restless drive to achieve that demands a growth mindset, and the grounding, centering motivation of my family. This combination is what motivates me to lead Knox Pest Control every single day.
